Mustard Seed - July/August 2003

Hello Brethren,

When we started the mustard Seed, our intentions were to give short statements on biblical questions and biblical ideas. We wanted to gender thoughts and conversations on these scriptures, or questions. The following question is asked in keeping with that policy.

How many times per day or in a week do we think or say this? "Not that I speak in respect of wants,-- for I have learned in whatsoever state I am , therewith to be content" (Phil. 4:11). Any child of God should embrace this classic scripture with thankfulness. We are just Pilgrims passing through a foreign country (Heb. 11:9-10) just as  Abraham was. The meaning of the word content is: "self satisfaction." The self is controlled with what has been given to it. Please notice that the apostle Paul said that he "learned," giving the indication of experiencing or practicing this, vs.12 ---"to have plenty and to suffer need."  These were some of the experiences of Paul, so we should keep in mind that we will experience some of this in various degrees in our walk with Jesus Christ also.

Maybe you could stop at this moment and think about your contentment.  Compare   1Tim.6:6 with Phil. 4:11.  The Apostle Paul said, in verse 13, of Phil. chapter 4, "I can do all things through ( Greek "in" ) Christ, the one empowering me."

In Christ Service,

John Shavers
