‘In order to help others, we must be selfish”! How many sermons have you heard telling us not to be selfish? There is a wrong type of selfishness and there is a right type of selfishness, turn to Mat. 7:12 “Therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them. For this is the Law & Prophets." Christ was saying, that you do want to be treated a certain way, don’t you? Well do those things for others. Let’s look back at the proceeding verses, start in verses 7-8, we are told to ask, verses 9-10 emphasizes the desire for what we need & expect, verse 11 tells us that God desires to give to us the things we need or desire, all of these verses points out a selfish want or desire. Christ concludes verse 7 “THEREFORE” (because you have needs & desires, you know that others have the same) ALL things whatsoever YOU would that men should do to YOU, do you even so to them".
How TO
ASCRIBE VALUE TO OTHERS, and in so doing be a video cassette to your children, not just audio but audio & video. If we made a personal list of the things we wanted done for us or to us we would want truth, good health, safety, respect etc; there are millions of people desiring these also. According to Christ, do those things for them. Can you imagine what would happen to the population in our mental hospitals, medical hospitals, prisons, youth detention centers? If people would ascribe value to others and told them the truth, give to others rather than steal from them, these institutions would see a great decline in their population.
Look at Phil.2: 3-4 “BUT IN LOWLINESS OF MIND LET EACH ESTEEM OTHERS BETTER THAN THEMSElVES” LOOK NOT EVERY MAN ON HIS OWN THINGS, BUT EVERY MAN ALSO ON THE THINGS OF OTHERS”. Do we want to be esteemed worthy of honor? Do we want to be loved? I am sure that we desire these things, according to scripture Christ taught (Mat 7:12) and demonstrated that we are to ASCRIBE VALUE TO OTHERS, "LET THIS MIND BE IN YOU WHICH WAS ALSO IN CHRIST JESUS”.
