Mustard Seed - May/June 2006
Hello everyone,
During the days of Unleavened Bread we examined ourselves for hidden sins and wanted to get rid of them. In order to balance our lives we have Pentecost—the giving of abilities to be “witnesses” of Jesus Christ to this world and to the Church. Today and on an ongoing basis we should be examining ourselves for the “talents” given to us.
In Matt. 25:14-30, Jesus points out that he has given talents to his servants to be used while he is away. These talents are given according to the person’s “natural ability.” Verse 19 points out the return of the Lord to “compute the account.” This area of Jesus’ teaching, is telling us that we, his servants, have been given something extra in order to be productive for him.
The original disciples (Apostles and non Apostles) were told to wait at Jerusalem until they were given power to do what he wanted to be done at that time . Acts 1: 4-8, as we read through the book of Acts, men and women disciples saw in others their talents and they knew their own talents also.
When you look at Matt. 25:14-30, these people knew their talents, but only two-thirds were faithful with them, the other one-third had an erroneous impression of Jesus, verse 24-25. When reading about these talents, they are given to his servants freely to use, they are called the gifts of the spirit, ( Rom.12, I Cor.12, Eph. 4:7-12 and I Pet. 4:7-11).
We need to know our gifts because the parables tells us that our final judgment will be on our usage of them. So we need to examine ourselves and know what talents/gifts that has been given to us today.
Just as we saw during Unleavened Bread, various things that we did not want, some were revealed directly through God’s holy spirit, some through the teaching of a preacher using the word of God.
We should ask and listen for the answer on what talents that have been given to us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.
In Christ service,
