Mustard Seed - August/September 2007
How does Acts 20:7 affect the keeping of the Sabbath?
It doesn’t. Keep in mind that the scriptures, and the Jews acknowledged that God’s days began from “evening to evening.” And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night, and the evening and morning were the first day. (Gen. 1:5 also notice Neh.13:19)
So, by mention of the time of midnight, we must understand this event as occurring in the night part of the first day of the week, --in order for it to be –still the first day of the week. This event therefore would have occurred in the time frame of what we today would call “Saturday night.”
There is little value in using Acts 20:7 as evidence for Sunday-keeping and in particular, as a basis for regular observance of that day, The time, occasion and manner for the conduct of that recorded meeting clearly indicate that it was a special gathering as a send-off of Paul before his departure toward Syria. This was not a Sunday morning worship service.
Luke refers to the time of the meeting, not because it was on a Sunday but to call attention to the fact that Paul was “ready to depart,” because of what happened to Eutychus, including the accompanying miracle, and because the reference to the time helps to give a chronological framework to Paul’s journey.
