A Spiritual Lesson From The Mulberry Tree

Mustard Seed -  July/August 2008

My husband and I have a wild mulberry tree in our back yard, and when I was a child my family had one in our yard also. There is no fruit sweeter and few fruits more nutritious than mulberries which are chock full of anti-oxidants, Vitamin C, Iron Potassium and a surprising amount of protein.  Mulberries are very nourishing and good for anemia, constipation, insomnia, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis among other things.

Even with all of these wonderful characteristics, few adults want them in their yards and my husband is no exception.  My parents talked of cutting the one we had down—and eventually did over my childish protests.  These trees leave purple splotches on neighborhood sidewalks and patios. Years ago, when everyone hung their laundry on clothes lines, the birds would fly over after eating the mulberries and leave hard to remove purple stains on the entire neighborhood’s clean wash. Even so, the children love the fruit off these trees along with the birds and many beneficial—and not so beneficial insects.

The purple stain is very significant which I will explain in a moment.

My husband wanted to build a fence when we bought our back property and the mulberry tree was in his way, so he cut it down before I even knew it existed.  He put up the fence and that mulberry tree grew back and interwove itself  into the fence and is slowly destroying it, but the tree continues to grow and produces much excellent fruit even though we are basically ignoring it, if my husband is not actively hacking branches off of it.  The more he tries to get rid of it, the more it thrives and the more fruit it produces—and the more purple evidence!

This tree reminds me of the Word of God and His people.  The same principle seems to apply.  Evidence of God’s Word is still everywhere and most people consider it a nuisance—especially if a family member actually wants to take it seriously.   Over the centuries many dedicated attempts were made to suppress and destroy the Bible and when that didn’t work, church leaders for many years only used certain passages and discouraged anyone from actually reading very much of it. The result was a Laodicean  attitude among church people and agnosticism or just plain unbelief among the population at large.

Now we are at a time when all mention of God is being taken out of the public schools, off government documents and out of public buildings and displays under the completely bogus guise of “separation of church and state”.  In many countries, Christians’ are being imprisoned and murdered because they believe and obey the God of the Bible.  In the US many are being intimidated and apologetic, but the few true sheep are being separated from the goats and are becoming stronger than ever!  Just like my poor harassed and wounded mulberry tree, we are speaking out and cannot be stopped! In the very end time, our blood will stain the world with purple like the crushed mulberries and it will just not go away!
