A Spiritual Lesson From The Mulberry Tree
The Spirit of Discernment
Mustard Seed - July/August 2008
The Apostle Paul lays out in I Cor. 12:1-11 the various gifts of God's Holy Spirit in us and one of the vital ones He mentions is being gifted with the ability of 'Discernment'. That is the ability to separate, to recognize something clearly, to be shrewd and keenly aware of things around us or what is happening elsewhere- similar to that of understanding prophecy, discerning spirits, etc.
You may be blessed with this gift and not know it or failing to use it to the edification of the members of God's Church. God has given to each of us various gifts to help us to 'work out our Salvation with fear & trembling’ (Philip. 2:12)--in other words Brethren, we are to be accomplishing our Salvation everyday that God gives to us!
Before The Day of Pentecost, notice what Christ told the Disciples: John 14:16-18 "And I will pray to The Father and He shall give you another Comforter (The Holy Spirit) that 'It' may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of Truth which the World cannot receive, because it (The World) does not see IT or know and recognize IT (God's Spirit), but you know and recognize IT for IT lives with you (constantly) and will be in you. I (Christ) will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."
God's Spirit in us is to help us to obtain Salvation; that is why we are never alone! Discernment gives you the ability to analyze or to forsee events even before they happen! God's Spirit in you gives you the ability to put Scriptures together to be able to discern the times we live in!
You can readily discern God's spirit in you when you are dealing with those who are unconverted. Notice your ability to discern the deep chasm (gap) between you and them in conversation (attitude). The Apostle Paul brings this out clearly in I Cor. 2:10-16. Paul says the carnal mind cannot perceive or understand the revelations of the Spirit of God, because the 'words' of God are Spiritually discerned - but you can if God's Spirit is in you. Your Spirit-led mind can readily grasp and understand the motives of others - but they cannot comprehend you brethren, because the gifts of The Holy Spirit lifts you higher in understanding that the unconverted cannot understand; that is why those in Christ's day could not understand what He was saying—He said they could perceive (become aware of), but not mentally grasp the meaning of the words He was saying to them!
Brethren since Christ lives in you through The Holy Spirit; He will see to it that your mind is changed to discern Spiritual things. That is why we are told in scripture not to grieve or hinder The Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30, I Thes. 5:19), but to let IT guide us into all truth and understanding.
You will recall In Matt .24:1...when the Disciples came up to Jesus to call to His attention the magnificence of the Temple in Jerusalem that Jesus 'through discernment' told them that the Temple would be destroyed and not one stone of the Temple would be left standing upon another----this occurred a few years later after His crucifixion between 69-71 A.D. when the Roman armies, after a two-year siege of Jerusalem, entered the city and destroyed the Temple and over a million Jews were killed!
Each of us must use discernment today to fully understand the perilous times we live, spoken of by Jesus, so we can be fore-warned before those things occur! God's Spirit in you is to help you to bear up under the pressures of the times in which we now live, and as we see His return approaching! God's Spirit in you will also help you to bear-up under your own weaknesses and help you to overcome them.
Finally brethren, understand that God's Spirit in you pleads to God on your behalf (Rom. 8:16-31) to give you the Faith that you need to endure all things--to stand firm; letting Christ in you 'Build You Up Into A Holy Temple' pleasing to God preparing you for 'Your Adoption As His Own Forever'. Let 'Discernment' and its power prepare you for this!
