Mustard Seed -  May/June 2008

Where was Jesus Christ between the ages of 12 and 30?

The bible does not give a day by day nor a year by year history of Jesus’ life and travels.  We have a short biographical sketch of Jesus birth, his parents and of his life.  Let’s look at what we have on Jesus’ life.

We can start in Luke 2:42 “ and when he was 12 years old.” The next mention of his age is in Luke 3:23  “and Jesus himself began to be about 30 years of age.”

What does the Bible indicate about this period of time?  Turn back to Luke 2:51 “ and he (Jesus) went down with them ( his parents) and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them.”  This is after the incident in the temple with the elders.   In Matthew 2:23 “  And he (Joseph) came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, he shall be called a Nazarene.”  This incident in Matthew 2, is where Joseph returned from Egypt with Mary and the young child Jesus.  Back to the book of Luke--- look at Luke 4:16 “ And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up.)  This is when he was about 30, he was preaching in the synagogue.  According to the word of God, Jesus was brought up in Nazareth.  And remember he was subject (to subordinate) to his parents ( Luke. 2:51).  When Jesus was preaching in his own country, what did people say?   Matthew 13:54-56  “ ...they were astonished and said, whence then hath this man this wisdom and these mighty works?”   Is not this the carpenter’s son?  Is not his mother called Mary?  And his brethren James, and Joses, and Simon and Judas?”  And his sisters, are they not all with us?”  These people knew Jesus, they knew his whole family.

When the church was being established, the phrases  “Jesus of Nazareth” or “Jesus Christ of Nazareth” is used.  Look at:  Acts 2:22 , Acts 3:6, Acts 4:10, Acts 6:14, Acts 10:28, Acts 22:8 and Acts 26:9.  We do not see ---Jesus of China, Jesus of Spain, or Jesus of Rome.   It is evident that Jesus came from Nazareth.
